Two Years, One Baby

On July 30, it was our two year wedding anniversary. Two years ago, this was our day.

One year ago, Graham was just a tiny little zygote and we celebrated like this.

And I don't have a picture of this year's night's activities, but it consisted of eating Chinese food off the coffee table, jiggling a fussy Graham, Aaron coming down with a cold and me packing for a night away for work. Romantic? No. Our new reality that we're 100% OK with? Yes.

But we did eventually celebrate. The following Saturday Grandma Ange babysat while Aaron and I went to dinner and the Trollwood musical, Shrek.

It was an awesome performance on a comfortable night at a beautiful outdoor theater. And oh yeah, the company was pretty great too.

So we enjoyed our celebration and appreciated the time to ourselves. It's easy to get caught up in all things baby and forget that we haven't been to dinner by ourselves since he was born. Much less dinner AND a show. Whoa.

We were pretty excited to get home to this guy though (though he was fast asleep by that point).

Two years, one baby and a whole lot of love. So much to be thankful for.

Finding his tootsies

Somebody is pretty obsessed with his toes these days.

How can it get any better? Built in toys, available 24/7.

Saturday Morning Party

As I mentioned before, it's easy to feel as though you're on a bit of house arrest when you have a little bambino in the house. Especially in the summer when all your friends are gallivanting off to the lake each weekend (or at least that's what you tell yourself).

When Aaron and I realized we hadn't seen some of our friends all summer, we decided to throw a little party to remedy it.  Best thing about it....it was in the morning.

The get-together was in early August. Bagels and coffee for the adults (who actually weren't gallivanting off to the lake). And Graham's "big boy" toys for the kiddos.

It was fun to watch Graham watch the big kids. You could tell he couldn't wait to be able to play and move like them.

And it was such a comfortable day, we headed outside for some fun in the sun (actually the shade, but shade doesn't rhyme with fun). Graham had a good time checking out grass for the first time.

Is it obvious that daddy dressed Graham for the day? Yellow shirt and plaid shorts were the clear choice for the Hill boys.

Almost as snazzy as Graham's and my matching navy and gray stripes from a few months ago.

Anyway, a couple hours in and nap time called so Graham said goodbye to his friends.

Trend setters that we are (see above fashion notes), we think we might have really started something with morning get-togethers. 8:30 bedtime? Absolutely no problem when the party's at 10 a.m.

First Fever

Graham got his first fever on July 31. And wouldn't you know it, it coincided with mama's first night away.

I went to Des Moines for work July 31. While boarding the plane from Minneapolis to Des Moines at 10 a.m., Aaron called to tell me Graham was being sent home from daycare with a fever of 101.5.

Not fun news to hear. Of course all I wanted to do was be home and hold him and help him feel better....and make sure he was ok.

But luckily Grandma Sue was able to come over and watch him. And luckily I was only gone one night.

Graham got all the snuggles he needed from Grandma.

And she kept me posted on how he was doing. He still played and did pretty well as he started to feel better.

I got home late Thursday night and brought him to the doctor Friday morning. By then the fever was gone. Doctor prescribed some ear drops to help with ear pain as she detected he had some fluid in his ears (but not an ear infection, thank goodness).

Not an ideal situation to have to be gone through all of that, but some consoling words from mama friends, a Grandma in town to snuggle him, and a daddy that took good care while I was away made it bearable.

Weekend Away

The last weekend in July, we enjoyed a weekend away at a Bed and Breakfast on Maple Lake near Mentor, MN.

We stayed at "The Inn at Maple Crossing" and went to the area for a Brewfest event that Aaron attended to pedal Fargo Beer.

That was Saturday afternoon/evening where Aaron did this.

And Graham did this.

But the rest of the weekend was just about R&R and family time.

We went to Rhombus Guys for pizza on Friday night.

That was kind of a milestone in itself as it was the first time Graham was entertained/kept content at a restaurant by toys and stimulation. Before this night, restaurants have entailed full sleeping by him, a necessary bottle or one of us leaving the table to walk around with him while he fusses (since it's typically in the evening).

This time when he got a little fussy, a new rattle, stuffed animal or taggie blanket seemed to do the trick.

All that fun eventually lead to a nap with mom though.

But he was wide awake when we left...

Happy.

Our room was great and had lots of room for baby and us. It even had a rocking chair to keep our bedtime routine pretty much intact!

Bedtime.

Morning came quickly with Graham in our room and lots of windows. We loved our room here but it made us appreciate the blackout blinds we have in Graham's room at home. As soon as the sun was up....so was he!

But we just snuggled up and made the best of it.

Up early made naps easy for G. Too bad mom and dad weren't so lucky.

The well-lit room was great though. We enjoyed a view of the lake on three of the four walls.

And it was a comfortably cool weekend so sitting in the room with the windows open kind of felt like sitting on a porch.

It was a great weekend for just the three of us. With a new baby in the summer it's easy to feel a little house-bound. This getaway was just what we needed!

Daddy and Me

Just the boys, hanging out.

Who needs clothes? Not me...

Well you see, dad, here's what happened....

Love these two so much!

Early July

A few snaps from early July.

Busted with some thumb sucking.

Smiling.

Visits to the brewery (dad's "fancy" new office). Graham was a little bored by it....

Go Cobbers! (blanket was snagged from Grandma Ange's place. It's what mom and Uncle Paul and Uncle Eric played on as bambinos too).

We love our toys.

Can't get enough of ourselves in the mirror. Don't blame him...

Hanging out with Grandma Mike.

We like our moose toy!

Profile shot.

So strong.

Up close.

Flexing for the ladies.

So curious.

Propped up.

Enjoying the new perspective.

I learn best if I taste it...

 Until next time...
